MBA Study Trip Indonesia
28 September to 4 October 2024

Indonesia is a fast-developing country in south east Asia. With a population of almost 280 million (4th in the world) and a GDP of 4.7 trillion (PPP, 7th in the world) Indonesia is becoming an important player in global economy. As an upper-middle income country and member of the G20, Indonesia is classified as a newly industrialized country. Besides a shrinking agricultural sector (12 % of GDP), there is a powerful industrial sector (42 %) and a growing service sector. Our study trip will give insights into this dynamic economy.

We will visit both Swiss as well as local companies. Indonesia is also a growing touristic destination, offering a diverse cultural heritage, beautiful landscapes with more than 17’000 with one of the highest biodiversity in the world. We will end our study trip on Bali – the touristic hotspot of Indonesia – where we have the chance to visit the smart banana village, a joint research project of ITB (a leading university of Indonesia) and FHNW, combining organic agriculture, sustainable tourism, technology (e.g. drones, biotechnology), and cooperation building.

MBA Study Trip Warsaw (Poland) and Berlin (Germany)
15 – 22 March 2025

This study trip will bring us to two different centres of economic and political power in Europe. We will start in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, which transformed rapidly after the fall of the iron curtain in 1989 from a low-income communist country with an economy dominated by big stateowned companies into a high-income, free market economy dominated by many SME (GDP/capital of 18’000 US$). We will get insights both in Swiss and local companies and discuss possibilities and challenges for the Swiss companies in Poland. Besides the impressive economic development Poland is also known as the inventor of Vodka, the home of Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie, Copernicus, Frederic Chopin, and Pope John Paul II. After Poland, one of the upcoming political centres of Europe, we will go to Berlin, the old centre of power in Europe. We will focus on getting insights into the vibrant start-up scene in Berlin. We will have the chance to interact with founders and actors of the ecosystem. Berlin is also a cultural hotspot with a big number of museums, galleries, theatres, events, open airs, and cultural start-ups.

MBA Study Trip Japan
27 September to 4 October 2025

Japan is a highly developed country in East Asia. With a population of approximately 125 million (11th in the world) and a GDP of 5 trillion USD (PPP, 3rd in the world), Japan is a major player in the global economy. As a high-income country and member of the G7, Japan is renowned for its advanced technological sector and strong manufacturing industry. The agricultural sector, while small (1% of GDP), remains efficient, supported by a robust industrial sector (30%) and a dominant service sector.
Economically, Japan is known for its world-leading automotive and electronics industries, with companies like Toyota and Sony setting global standards. However, the country must address prolonged low inflation and labor shortages to sustain its economic vitality. Despite its successes, Japan faces significant challenges. The country has a rapidly aging population, leading to demographic challenges that strain the pension system and social services.
Additionally, Japan’s public debt is one of the highest in the world, driven by decades of economic stagnation and substantial public spending. Balancing economic growth with fiscal sustainability is a critical issue for Japan’s policymakers.
Our study trip will provide insights into this dynamic economy, including visits to both Swiss and Japanese companies, a reception at the Swiss Embassy, as well as celebrating the official FHNW day at the (world) Expo 2025 in Osaka. Japan is also a top touristic destination, offering a rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and vibrant cities.
